Asthma and Scuba Diving - Why the Confusion?

Asthma and Scuba Diving - Why the Confusion?

Scuba diving is prohibited for asthma sufferers in some countries but not others. Why? Should asthma sufferers risk ignoring this rule? Either scuba diving is dangerous to an asthma sufferer, or it is safe. Why this confusion?

Insurance Companies Make the Rules

Depending on which country you are in, you may scuba dive to your heart's content -- or not. The simple answer is that insurance companies make the rules. Countries with high insurance coverage are less likely to allow scuba diving for asthma sufferers as they will not be covered for the risk: the fact that most asthma sufferers are at no greater risk than any other person while scuba diving is not considered relevant. Insurance policies work on a hypothetical basis, not necessarily on facts. Stats from last year on scuba diving accidents show that only one of the 5,000 reported was attributed to having had an asthma attack in an underwater environment.

Insurance companies have taken advice from doctors. Doctors base their recommendations on the presumption that if one were to have an asthma attack while under water, he wouldn't know how to breathe. They state "The limiting factor for asthmatics is adequate ventilatory capacity underwater." This is a sweeping statement and is certainly not true for all asthma sufferers. It puts everyone who has asthma into the one category, not taking into account that where asthma is concerned, people's needs and abilities vary hugely.

Asthma is Unique to an Individual

It ignores asthma is unique to each individual, affecting people in different ways. Some people get asthma from being near perfume and are perfectly OK in cold water. Some are triggered by dust while being absolutely fine in dry air. It is impossible to generalize what is likely to cause an asthma attack as no two cases are the same.

The perceived problem is the cold air breathed in by the diver. Then there are individuals who are prone to strong emotions -- they may be in a high state of fear or excitement. These emotions are in the general public and can be controlled drug-free with guidance and practice. Asthma sufferers may look for successful alternative methods for controlling their asthma. Breathing methods have been brought into the mainstream in recent years: research done in Russia has brought relief to millions of people world wide: yoga has helped countless people live full lives again. It would be good to see more conventional medical practitioners become aware of these drug-free benefits. How much effort does it take to look up a website with an alternative solution about how to cure asthma the natural way?

Scuba Diving Vacation Planning Tips

Scuba Diving Vacation Planning Tips

Whether you are taking your first scuba diving vacation or your fifth, you need to be aware of all of the planning and preparation that goes into this type of trip. It is not like a "regular" vacation where you may just bring changes of clothing and your favorite shampoo. A scuba diving vacation can be a lot more work to plan but in the end you can get so much more out of it. When planning a diving vacation, you need to think about the destination (both the location and the type of accommodations), the cost, and the extra things you will need to bring.

Did you know that there are travel agencies which specialize in scuba diving vacations? They work the same as any travel agency with the additional bonus of knowing about diving as well. You can choose from a scuba diving resort which offers diving as part of its activities and may also provide training and equipment as well, or you can choose a scuba diving vacation, where you set up scuba diving activities outside of the resort setting. A beginner may prefer to go to an all-inclusive diving resort so that they will not have to locate these services separately.

You can choose from a warm or cool climate for your scuba diving vacation depending on your training and certification status but most people opt for diving in the warmer climates.

You can limit the cost of your scuba diving vacation by purchasing an all-inclusive package or going with a group tour. However, if you are willing and able to do a lot of research, you may be able to lower your scuba diving vacation costs by shopping around for the best deals, going during the off peak tourist season, etc.

When you go on your diving vacation, contact the airline to find out about restrictions on carrying your equipment. You may want to see how much of your essential equipment can be brought in a carry-on bag. Make sure that if you are traveling out of the country you have the necessary passports, an international driver's license, and that your immunizations are up to date. Many people also purchase diving or travel insurance as well, because their regular insurance won't cover it. You should also make sure to bring any medications you will need.

A vacation scuba diving can be relaxing as well as exciting if you take the time to plan.

The Importance of Dive Insurance

The Importance of Dive Insurance

So, you have finally made it. You mastered your Open Water SCUBA skills and finally received your C-card. Congrats! Welcome to the new and exciting world of SCUBA diving! Now, before you begin looking for that world class vacation, there's one other important thing to consider. You don't want to forget (or ignore) the purchase of dive insurance.

Diving is one of the most exhilarating ways to spend a vacation. As your Open Water textbooks explained, however, there are many inherent risks involved with the sport. Although the risk is generally very low if you follow all the rules for bottom times, ascent rates, safety stops, etc., things can still happen. Even if you follow all the rules to a "T", no one, even in the best of condition, can be completely guaranteed against the bends or any other accident.

Also, as we've been witnessing more and more lately, mother nature can rear her ugly head at very unexpected times. What if a big wave sweeps all your gear into the deep dark depths of the ocean? Dive equipment is far from cheap. Without an insurance policy which covers such things, it might not be so easy for the average person to go out and purchase another complete set of gear. You might think your items were covered by your home insurance, but this is rarely the case. The safest bet is to purchase a specific policy which caters to the diver's need. There are many choices when it comes to purchasing dive insurance. Which one you should choose depends on a variety of factors.First, you should check with your own primary insurance company to investigate your coverage in the event of a dive related accident. In particular, inquire as to what coverage is provided for hyperbaric treatment and emergency air evacuation in case of decompression illness. An uninsured ride to the chamber can cost you $10,000-$20,000. The hyperbaric treatments are thousands more than that. Equipment losses are another consideration. After you're familiar with what you already have, then comb through the benefits provided by the various insurance companies that have policies specifically for divers.

There are many companies which offer this type of insurance. Some of the biggest are Diver's Alert Network (DAN), Dive Assure, and Dive Safe, to name just a few. Each of these has its own caveats, so you must look through the policies thoroughly. Some are primary insurances, while others are secondary. Some have depth limit or technical diver restrictions. Some cover you at home, while others cover you after you've left the country. Some offer trip cancellation insurance in case of illness or inclement weather. In addition to providing insurance, DAN is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to research, and the wellness of divers. They provide a 24 hour hotline, staffed by medical personnel who are able to answer your dive related medical questions, in both emergency or non emergency situations. All are important considerations as you make your decision. The most important thing, though, is to make the decision. Getting caught abroad in a medical situation is scary enough. Getting caught without the appropriate insurance could be a life altering event. The financial ramifications could last long beyond the physical ones.

Scuba Diving Life Insurance

Scuba Diving Life Insurance

This is not always an easy thing. Many life insurance companies will charge extra premium for scuba divers. Some will not, but are more limited to recreational divers up to 50-75 feet depending on the life insurance companies. These life insurance companies will offer their best rate class if you medically qualify. Some will offer their second best rate class and as stated, others will charge extra premium for the risk. It is important to work with a life insurance agent that understands all the markets to help best position you with the best life insurance company.

Scuba Diving is using a self-contained breathing set to stay underwater for periods of time greater than human breath-holding ability allows. The diver carries all equipment necessary for diving and is not reliant upon equipment elsewhere (e.g. on the surface) to supply breathing gas or other support during the dive. The diver swims underwater using fins attached to the feet. Some divers also move around with the assistance of a DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle), commonly referred to as a scooter, or by using surface-tethered devices called sleds, which are pulled by a boat. The word 'SCUBA' is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

The life insurance industry reviews a wide range of risk factors when underwriting a scuba diver purchasing term life insurance. These classifications include, but are not limited to:

Recreational diving

Public safety diving

Technical diving (also called Tech Divers)

Cave diving

Deep diving

Ice diving

Wreck diving

Commercial diving

Scientific diving

Scuba Diving Masks - Giving You A Clearer View Beneath The Sea

Scuba Diving Masks - Giving You A Clearer View Beneath The Sea

Scuba diving is a great leisure sport that allows you to view and explore the majestic beauty that lies under the sea. However, this beautiful spectacle is sometimes marred by the mist that forms on the mask, depriving you of the ability to fully enjoy the magnificent underwater paradise that spread out before you. This is why it is very important to carefully select the scuba diving mask that will give you a clear and unobstructed view beneath the sea.

There is a wide range of scuba diving masks to choose from and it is very important to select the one that perfectly fits your head and face. You would not want that mask which would let even just a minuscule amount of sea water enter, would you? So now may be the right time to acquaint yourself with the different scuba diving masks and how they would benefit you.

Single Window

This particular scuba diving mask is composed of a single glass pane that spans to both sides of the face-gear. It has no physical bridge in the middle which allows for greater view of your surroundings.

Double Window

As opposed to the single window scuba diving mask, this type uses two lenses which are separated by a rubber fitting in the middle that tightly fits your nose bridge. This allows for maximum protection against seawater seepage. Although it has a separator in the middle, it does not obstruct your view in a major way since most lines of sight do not normally extend to this particular spot.

Three Window Masks

This scuba diving mask is similar to a single window mask except that, instead of the usual thick rubber or plastic which borders the sides, its clear glasses extend to this area giving the wearer ability to detect movement from either side.

Full Face Scuba Mask

As the name indicates, full face scuba diving masks cover the whole face of the diver and are very efficient in sealing out water even in great depths. The mouthpiece is usually built into the faceplate which allows for easier breathing while swimming underwater. While very efficient and capable in its designed task, this particular scuba diving mask is not usually used in recreational diving.

Choosing an efficient scuba diving mask that fits perfectly and one that you will be comfortable with is very important especially if you will be swimming underwater for long periods of time. Silicon skirts and mask shape should fit your face and head perfectly so that there is no danger of seawater coming inside your face-gear. Once you get that mask that is really a perfect fit and is designed in a way that would not allow mists to form or seawater to seep in, then you can go ahead and enjoy the beauty that awaits you beneath the sea.

Nitrox Scuba Diving: Extending Bottom Time With Scuba

Nitrox Scuba Diving: Extending Bottom Time With Scuba

You jump on a plane with your scuba diving buddies and head out of the country. Though hopping onto a rocking boat isn't what you came here for, the boat will get you to the dive spot. Finally, you make the plunge into the deep blue and you start to think "this is what makes it all worth it". Aggressively you swim from the top of the coral reef to the bottom and back to the top just trying to see in every nick and cranny. Then all of a sudden you realize your dive is done with plenty of air in your tank!

How can that be? This is because of the no decompression limits. It happens to all of us scuba divers. This is the interval that a diver may theoretically spend at a given depth without having to perform decompression stops. The no decompression limits helps divers plan dives so that they can stay at a given depth and ascend without stopping while avoiding significant risk of decompression sickness.

In 1985, Dick Rutkowski, started to introduce enriched air nitrox to the recreational diving community. This was a major movement that did not see any impact in the industry until the late 1990's. Even then training organizations, instructors and other divers in the community fought nitrox from becoming mainstream.

Nitrox reduces the proportions of nitrogen by increasing the proportion of oxygen, reducing the risk of decompression sickness for the same dive profile, or allows extended dive times without increasing the need for decompression stops for the same risk. In turn, nitrox allows us to stay longer and decreases our minimum surfaces.

Note: nitrox is not necessarily safer than air, although it can extend our bottom time and decrease surface intervals. Nitrox also has a risk of oxygen toxicity and if used incorrectly underwater you can increase the risk of convulsions due to the higher proportion of oxygen. This is why it is important to seek professional training and certification.

It's just like driving a car. Once you know the risk, and how do it properly, it can be very safe. Nitrox diving is the same. Once you learn and understand the risks you become a safer diver.

As a reward for becoming a safer diver, you can have the ability to stay longer underwater scuba diving and spend less time out of the water during a surface interval. Now go dive with nitrox!

Diving Underwater - Scuba Diving What An Experience

Diving Underwater - Scuba Diving What An Experience

Have you been considering learning to scuba dive. I overheard my coworkers talking about how much fun it was and I took the bait. I took lessons and entered a different world. Once your head slips below the surface there is an explosion of color, the strangest organisms you will ever see, the sensation of weightlessness and you have the ability to fly. The following is my account of the dive that turned this sport into a passion for me. Read on and enjoy, see if scuba might be something you would be interested in.

It was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico along the Pacific coast that I made my first real dive into salt water. I had been certified basic scuba diver for about two months and had made several fresh water dives in the lakes of central Texas. I thought that this type of diving could not be surpassed. A friend suggested that I join a dive club in the Houston area which offered dive travel at group discounts. I went to my first club meeting at Rice University, joined and signed up for the next trip they were offering.

That trip took me to Puerto Vallarta. Upon arrival, we made an afternoon check out dive off the beach. Once the dive master was satisfied with our abilities, he assigned buddy teams for the morning dive trip. Up early and eagerly waiting at the dock our boat finally arrived. A line was formed and gear, tanks and supplies were loaded. The boat ride was about forty five minutes and ended by anchoring near a small island offshore.

The dive master took my buddy and I aside and said that due to our inexperience he wanted to lead our first dive and for us to stay with him. That was just fine with me for I did have some anxiety being this far offshore and unfamiliar with boat diving. We planned our dive for seventy feet maximum depth for no longer that fifty minutes or 500 pounds of air which ever came first. We entered the water, our group of three giving the OK sign, deflated our BCD's and down we went.

I had entered a new universe. Immediately there was an explosion of color. Beautiful multicolored sponges, corals and fish. As a mater of fact we were surrounded by fish looking for a hand out, evidently this was a popular dive site. We descended along the slopping bottom until we reached our seventy foot max depth, leveled off and found neutral bouncy. We swam around looking in every nook and cranny for whatever we might find. Finally my training kicked in and I decided it would be a good idea if I to check my pressure gauge. To my astonishment, I was down to 600 pounds and we had not been in the water for thirty minutes. I swam over to the dive master and showed him my gauge. He looked at me with big eyes, got my buddy's attention and gave the thumbs up sign for the three of us to surface.

We arrived and the surface and he said "man you are sucking some air", I replied "I am, this is the greatest thing I have ever done!!!" The smile on my face was from ear to ear and my heart was pounding. We located the dive boat about fifty yards away and he said "Let's dive to about ten feet and swim to the boat under the surface so that we don't have to fight the waves". We took a compass bearing, dove down to ten feet and headed off towards the dive boat with the dive master and my buddy leading the way.

You must understand the feeling of euphoria that I was experiencing. I had just seen an amazing new world with strange new creatures. I was in heaven as I followed my two buddies, then suddenly Wham!!! Something straightened out my right leg. I turned around in the water, two feet straight out from my left shoulder, as big as my fist was a black eyeball. To the right of my right shoulder, as big as my fist was another black eyeball. In between these two giant eyeballs was the ugliest face I have ever seen. Immediately, I pulled my knees to my chest and got into a ball while thinking "I 'm not feeding you a hand or foot, you're going to have to eat the whole thing".

I stayed in the ball position and stared eye to eye and it seamed like forever. Slowly it descended and went underneath me. I turned and watched as it swam underneath the dive master and my buddy. The dive master immediately turned to look for me and gave the up sign as we made eye contact. We all hit the surface with the dive master yelling Dave Dave did you see it? I replied, "see it hell, it grabbed me in its mouth!!!" " No, No" he replied, "their plankton eaters he only bumped you with his wing, you could have rode him!" as he realized my anxiety and tried to calm me down. Needless to say, I was ready to walk on water the rest of the way to the dive boat.

Of course the creature I now know was a manta ray and yes I could have rode him. It would be ten years before I would actually get the chance to again ride a "devil ray". This is my favorite dive story, it is true, it occurred in 1978 and I remember it as if I was looking into those giant black eyes right now!

The outcome of the encounter was as profound and strong then as now, "I am hooked on diving and always will be!!!" If you have been considering scuba diving, then know this statement, "diving is like going to a different world, you have the sensation of weightlessness and the sensation of being able to fly, on your journey you will encounter the strangest and most colorful organisms in the universe". Come join us, I look forward to sharing dive stories with you.

How to Breathe While You Are Underwater Scuba Diving

How to Breathe While You Are Underwater Scuba Diving

Whilst above water, breathing is something that comes totally naturally to us. However, our instinct when we put our faces under water is to hold our breath and not to breathe. So, once you get under water, how do you breathe and enjoy it? Not just that, but how do you do this efficiently?

Just relax
Well for a start, there is a little bit of concentration required to get the most efficient breathing, however over thinking about the process might start you getting the breathing wrong. So this leads us nicely to the first point about breathing under water - just relax!

You have limited supplies - use it well
When you breathe underwater you have only a limited amount of air on your back so your breathing technique has to be efficient and to make the most of the limited supply of air you have available. Your breathing should also relax you so that you are not panicked and can fully enjoy your dive. The feeling of being under water, rolling onto your back and watching your exhaled bubbles vanishing to the surface of the water is fantastic. So enjoy the feeling.

The purpose of the regulators
Air is supplied to you under the optimal pressure. The regulator in your mouth and the regulator on the tank reduce the air pressure to a safe level so that you can comfortably breathe it, whilst providing you your air at the same pressure as the water that is all around you. This gives a much easier and natural feeling to the breathing, so no need to suck hard.

Taking the actual breaths
Once you get your face under the water, start to slowly inhale through the regulator in your mouth. There is no need to do forced breaths that are too slow or too quick, just do not rush the breathing. And it is far more efficient to take a deeper breath than it is to take short sharp breaths. Again, going for a natural rhythm is best, but if you feel a slight panic setting in and your breathing quickening, make a conscious effort to control your breathing and take longer, slower breaths. Not only will this relax you, but it is more efficient.

Why? Well quite simply the air that you breath in does not all go into your lungs. Some stays in your mouth, your throat and the other passage ways leading to your lungs. A very shallow breath will actually mean that you only exhale this air and then replace it, meaning that no air is being replaced from your lungs. A deeper breath ensures that plenty of stale air is breathed out and fresh air reaches your lungs.

What Are Dental Implants And When Are They Used

What Are Dental Implants And When Are They Used

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are usually performed by periodontists. They are a great way to replace one or more missing teeth. They are an ideal option for people that are in good general oral health but who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason.

If you've lost a tooth or teeth, you will most likely be given the option of getting dental implants or a bridge to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants are very involved and time consuming but are more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework. This is because implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Dental implants are like having a natural tooth to replace the missing one. They are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever received an implant.

Dental implants serve three major functions:

o Replace one or more teeth without affecting bordering teeth.

o Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a removable partial denture.

o Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable. Dental implants are often recommended for patients that have bone loss throughout the mouth and have a lower denture that is loose because a dental implant can keep the denture in place.

The two most common types of dental implants used today are endosteal (in the bone) and subperiosteal (on the bone). Endosteal is the most commonly used type of implant. The various types include screws, cylinders or blades that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This type of implant is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures.

Subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework's posts protruding through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These types of implants are most often used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone height.

As you may have guessed, current X-rays are necessary in order for periodontists to make accurate diagnosis for what type of implant you may need. You also may be wondering if an insurance company covers dental implants. About half of the insurance companies do and those that say a dental implant and related services are not a benefit, will often consider paying as a bridge instead.

The steps for a dental implant generally include:

1. Surgery: During surgery, the doctor will make an incision in your gum tissue to place the implant post directly into the bone. With the current x-rays, the doctor is then able to determine which implant post is the correct one. He or she will use a drill to make an entrance site into the bone to place the implant. An x-ray is then taken to ensure that the implant is placed correctly. Surgery to place an implant is often less traumatic than the surgery to remove the tooth. The doctor will finish up surgery by placing sutures over the implant.

2. A post op appointment and a suture removal appointment are made.

3. Usually three months or so after the initial surgery, you can schedule a follow-up appointment for another x-ray to determine if the bone is healing around the implant. If your implant is healing well, you can schedule an appointment to uncover the implant post and attach an abutment. An impression can be taken soon thereafter for a crown to be placed on the implant post.

4. The impression is sent to the lab for a custom made implant crown.

5. Several weeks later, your missing tooth is replaced with the crown and your treatment is complete.

In summary, what happens during a dental implant procedure is that an implant post is placed in the bone and the gum tissue and bone heal around it. An abutment is the attachment that is placed on top of the implant post. A crown is made and cemented to the abutment. Your missing tooth is now replaced by a natural feeling and a natural looking dental implant and crown.

Under proper conditions, such as placement by a periodontist and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants over last 10 years have grown immensely in popularity. There have been new composites, better methods of implantation, and better methods of fabricating the implants. This has been an exciting time in the world of implants.

Most of the excitement over dental implants is a result of advantages with having them put into place. However, there are some disadvantages to them in the United States. One of these disadvantages is the cost of dental implants. This is probably the most common disadvantages that patients will point to. Implants are body parts and you really want to make sure you have an experienced implant surgeon who does a routine amount per year. It is difficult to elucidate a definitive cost or even a ballpark cost as patients have such individual needs and difficulty with their implant placement.

However, the cost of dental implants can typically be more affordable than what is presumed in most patients' minds. One can obtain a special from the dental office, or maybe even negotiate somewhat or finance the implant investment.

Another disadvantage is that dental insurance often does not cover the cost of dental implants or bone grafting. At times the insurance may cover part of the procedure, such as paying for the crown, the abutment, or even the implant itself. Unfortunately though, one must keep in mind that dental insurance just simply is not set up for this kind of expense. There are very low annual limits and this has not changed in over 3 decades. So in reality the insurance may only cover with simply one implant, but most patients need more than one implant. Some dental insurance plan simply exclude implants altogether.

Another disadvantage is that dental implants do require a surgical procedure. The implant is being placed into your bones, and there are some very small risks that add up to about 1% for individuals. This may include risk of nerve damage, prolonged bleeding, damage to other teeth, infection, etc. This is one reason is very important to go see an accomplished dentist for your implants.

Another disadvantage is that dental implants are not made to last forever. Implants maintain sufficient durability to most likely last for 10 to 20 years. However, an implant such as a porcelain crown or a bridge on an implant can break or chip. But keep in mind that implants are really no different than the teeth without implants. Crowns, fillings, dentures, they simply do not last forever and often need additional revision work. Going to see a very good dentist who maintains a technologically modern office may help dramatically such as a great lab, the design for the implant, and maintaining the appropriate diagnosis and implant is the key to getting fitted with durable implants and minimizing the need for revision.

As is the same with joint replacements, one can lose bone around the implants that are placed. If too much bone is lost, you will need to have a replacement of the entire implant. This is another reason to us choose a very skilled implant dentist.

The last disadvantage to be discussed here is timeframe. Placing a dental implant itself may only take an hour. But it takes time for the bone to grow into the implants. This may take anywhere from 3 months to 18 months depending on the patient's unique situation. With all these disadvantages, the pros still outweigh the cons when it comes to having implants placed. It is a long-term benefit for sacrifices actually short-term, and when teeth are lost it truly is the best option is to have a dental implant.

Dental Implants in Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental Implants in Cosmetic Dentistry

One of the reasons why people use beauticians is because they want to look attractive and appealing to people who see them. Most people feel the need to try to look beautiful.

To say that a dentist could be a beautician would be insulting to their profession. That is why cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized profession in most fields of dental health. The closest that a cosmetic dentist comes to 'dental health' is a dental prosthodontist. A dental prosthodontist is a dentist that diagnoses, treats, plans, rehabilitates and maintains the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues, using available and biocompatible substitutes recognized by the dental industry.

But like it or not, we would like our dentist to make us look beautiful. At least, that's how many people would like it. Some people would gladly spend huge amounts of money on having their teeth straightened, adjusted or whitened. Beauty has its advantages. For some women, for instance, beauty means having no problem with attracting a husband or new boyfriend. Beauty can also make a person seem more charming and influential.

Dental implants are the most sophisticated in dental treatment and repair. However, dental implants are the most expensive and complicated. There are risks involved in getting dental implants. For one thing, the nerves in the mouth may be damaged, causing numbness. Infection may also occur. The highest risk of complications is with heavy smokers. The result is that dentists will be hesitant to work on patients who are heavy smokers, due to the higher risk of having complications with dental implants. Unless the patient is willing to give up smoking and has in fact done so for several months, the implant dentist will not proceed with this delicate operation.

Dental implants can replace natural or lost teeth. Unlike natural teeth that can be attacked by germs, dental implants never rot or get cavities. And they look and feel just like your natural teeth. They will stay clean and white without any special treatment.

When an extraction occurs, there is an ugly gap in your teeth which could further lead to complications such as tooth or gum diseases. This is one of the reasons why those who undergo tooth extraction eventually lose all their teeth. The infection just spreads around without the patient noticing it. Eventually, these patients have to have full dentures at a fairly young age. They say that dentures rid you of all tooth headaches. But with dental implants, the remaining teeth can be saved and having full dentures may be unnecessary for those who have poor dental health.

Bridgework could replace a missing tooth but wires dangling around ones tooth do not look so good. Furthermore, bridgework has to be adjusted regularly. With implants, as soon as the operation is over, the dental implant works and looks just like natural teeth.

With a dental implant, the replacement implant is individually crafted to the needs of the patient. Hence an implant could enhance the natural beauty of teeth and that is why it is preferred over all other kinds of traditional treatment. Dental implants are a terrific advance in dental science and technology. Dental implants are just as natural as ordinary teeth. In fact, you can say that dental implants are an improvement to teeth because they replace diseased teeth with stronger and more resistant teeth that never decay.

It takes just a few visits to have your implant securely set in your teeth. In the meantime you will receive a temporary tooth until your dental crown can be inserted. When that is installed, then all your worries end there. You have a tooth implant that is as good as a natural tooth and even better in some cases, because it never gets cavities and prevent further damage to your remaining teeth.

Finding the best Implant dentist to take care of you, especially those near to you is easier online.

New Dental Implant Technologies

New Dental Implant Technologies

Conventional dental implants involve a procedure that lasts six months or more. The implant is placed, and allowed a period of six months to integrate with the bone and heal before it is crowned. Advancements in new dental implant technology have resulted in 'immediate loading', making teeth implants a one-day procedure.

Recent Advancements

Modern dental implant technologies have revolutionised the way tooth replacement is performed. Improvements in coating technology, advances in the shape and thread designs of implants and three dimensional scanning systems are some of the radical changes that are changing the way implants are done.

Improvements in Coating Technology: New methods of coating technology have made it easier for dental implants to assimilate with the jawbone, thereby enhancing their stability and durability. One of the latest developments in the field involves the coating of dental implants with a bone material that is synthetic in nature. This helps the implant to incorporate better into the jaw bone.
Three Dimensional Scanning System: A 3D dental CT scan uses Cone Beam Volumetric Technology (CBVT). It allows the scan to be performed with the patient in a sitting position, offering a clear view of where exactly the implant should be placed. The quality of the scanned image is excellent and the extent of the patient's exposure to radiation is reduced.
Tooth Implant Shape and Thread Designs Advancements: Implant thread design has a major impact on primary implant stability. Modern dental thread implant technology offers maximum primary contact, enhanced stability, increased surface area of the implant and easy integration with the bone without any stress. This advancement in implant technology minimises bone loss.
Screwless Dental Implants: Another recent advancement is single tooth dental implantation without the use of screws. This novel technique offers a clipping mechanism to bond the abutment and the material of the crown.
Immediate Loading or Osseointegrated Implants

Osseointegration refers to the fusing of the dental implant into the bone. The success of new implant technology depends on effective osseointegration. Modern implants are made up of two parts - the implant proper or artificial that is surgically implanted in the jaw bone and held in place with tiny titanium screws, and an abutment which connects the root to the crown.

CT Scanning Technology

The 3D dental CT scan is used to image the mouth and the implant is then positioned appropriately. CT Scans enable cosmetic dentists to fully plan a complete tooth implant procedure before the dental surgery. The cosmetic dentist is able to view a detailed three dimensional image created by the scan from any direction possible through 360 degrees. With conventional techniques there was a need for the dental surgeon to detach the gum tissue from the root and jaw bone and use probes to accurately measure the thickness and density of the jaw bone. With this new dental implant technology there is no waiting period involved, the procedure is often referred to as 'Teeth in an Hour'.

The Future of Tooth Implants

Recent advancements in the design of Teet implants and components used have enhanced the flexibility of the procedure so that the implant specialist to can customise it to suit the patient's bone structure. Research carried out at the Medical Centre of Columbia University resulted in developing new dental implant technology which uses stem cells to grow a dental implant in the mouth. This technology is in the very early stages and the research showed that it was possible to grow a fully formed tooth in approximately nine weeks form the implant procedure.

Besides the advantage of minimal treatment time, dental implants offer natural looking, stable and durable results. With dental technology progressing by leaps and bounds, the 21st century is expected to witness even more dramatic advancements in dental implant technology.

Natural Teeth Whitening - The Good and The Bad

Natural Teeth Whitening - The Good and The Bad

What is Natural Teeth Whitening?

Natural teeth whitening involves using natural products and substances that can often be found around the house. The term 'natural' can sometimes be ambiguous but for this article, consider natural whitening as synonymous with home whitening remedies. In other words, tooth whitening treatments you can make yourself with conventional household items.

There are so many different natural teeth whitening remedies that this article cannot even begin to scratch the surface. However, we will give you a few tried and tested remedies and some safety guidelines to be sure you don't damage your teeth. First, for anyone considering natural whitening, there are several essential points to be aware of:

Natural is Not Always Safer

Despite the common preconceptions, a home or natural teeth whitener is not always safer for your teeth or more healthy than a commercial product. Remember that commercial products face strict safety regulations that any home treatment obviously bypasses. In fact, many natural 'treatments' may work in the short-term but can actually damage your tooth enamel in the process, which can expose you teeth to decay. Keep in mind that white teeth does not necessarily mean healthy teeth. If you are at all in doubt of a natural whitening treatment, make sure you get the opinion of a trusted authority before proceeding. We will consider a few of these harmful 'treatments' shortly.

Good Oral Hygiene

Tooth whitening, whether natural or commercial, cannot be a substitute for good oral hygiene. A natural whitening treatment will whiten your teeth but the effect won't last long unless you also maintain good tooth and gum health by brushing and flossing regularly as instructed by your dentist. This is obviously important both for the appearance and the health of your teeth. Remember that, even if you want to look great tomorrow for that big date, business meeting, or social event, healthy teeth are what really matter in the long-term.

Natural Whitening is Effective

In fact, natural teeth whitening treatments can be nearly as effective as commercial products, just as safe, and definitely less expensive! As long as you avoid potentially unsafe treatments, natural teeth whitening is a good option for anyone who wants to avoid commercial whitening products for whatever reason. With a little research, everyone should be able to find a safe natural teeth whitener that works for them.

Natural Whitening Treatments - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Baking Soda: By itself, baking soda is safe on your teeth and it also reduces harmful acids and kills plaque-causing bacteria. You can brush your teeth normally with baking soda and it is also safe and effective when mixed with salt.

Peroxide: Gargling with peroxide after brushing your teeth (like you would a mouthwash/rinse) is a decent home whitening treatment. However, over-the-counter peroxide, often at 3% concentration, is just too weak to have a significant whitening effect when compared to commercial tooth whitening products.

Baking Soda and Peroxide: A combination of the previous treatments makes for an excellent natural teeth whitening solution. This involves combining a couple teaspoons of backing soda with an equal amount of peroxide into a cup or bowl. Mix until it achieves a paste-like consistency and then brush your teeth with the paste, leaving it on your teeth for several minutes. After that, spit it out, rinse and if you wish, brush with normal toothpaste.

Lemon Juice and Other Acidic Treatments: Lemon or other citrus juice or peels are one of the most commonly offered as natural whitening agents. They are not! Stay away from this whitening 'treatment'. The acid in lemon juice and citrus fruits will bleach your teeth a little but it will also deplete calcium from your tooth enamel, leaving it vulnerable to decay. The same is true of potassium hydroxide (also known as Lye or wood ash) and most other highly acidic 'treatments'. Do not use these as natural whiteners!

The above are just a few of countless dozens of natural teeth whitening treatments. Remember that natural whiteners in general are a wild card. Some treatments are good, some bad, and others are just plain dangerous. Before considering a natural tooth whitener, try to do some background research to be sure it is safe on your teeth.

Do You Know The Top Teeth Whitening Options?

Every one wants a whiter brighter smile. Due to age, smoking or caffeine, teeth can end up stained and yellow looking. Putting up with discolored teeth is a thing of the past and so is hiding your smile. With so many different options available, it is possible to find teeth whitening systems to suit anyone and any budget.

Before trying any teeth whitening options, it is advisable to seek the opinion of an oral health care professional who can advise you on which teeth whitening products are the best option for you and your teeth. Below are some of the many options that are available so that you can compare teeth whitening systems.

Laser Bleaching

There are a few popular laser-bleaching methods available. Feed back from other users is quite positive. Laser bleaching is a recommended procedure by oral heath professionals as well as many users.

Zoom

Zoom is a laser whitening gel with a special light that penetrates the teeth, breaking up stains and teeth discoloration, treatments take around 1 hour. The results of this treatment are immediate. This type of teeth whitening system is approved by many oral health care professionals and is done under their supervision. Zoom is very safe with very few complications or side effects and relatively painless. Whiteness will vary among different people depending on the structure and condition of teeth before the procedure.

Brite Smile

Brite smile is another laser bleaching system that uses the same type of products as Zoom. A whitening gel is applied to the teeth then a blue laser light is applied under direct supervision of an oral health care professional. This procedure is very safe with very few complications or side effects. Treatment will take about an hour and results can be seen immediately.

Bleaching

Bleaching is a popular method of teeth whitening using peroxide as the whitener. This is a popular and effective method that can be used in the comfort of your own home.

Night Guard Bleaching

Night Guard is a bleaching system that can be done at home. A whitening solution, usually peroxide, is placed in a tray that resembles a mouth guard. This tray is custom fitted for each person to avoid discomfort while the tray is in use. This custom fitting is usually performed by an oral health professional. Solutions vary in strength and the amount of time the night guard is worn varies, too, depending on the teeth whitening procedure that you choose. An application may take between 1 hour or over night. An oral health care professional will discuss the best procedure for you based on tooth discoloration and personal needs.

Arctic White System

Arctic white is another popular at home teeth whitening procedure. There are several steps to this tooth whitening system.

*The first step is to give teeth a really good cleaning to remove tartar with specially formulated toothpaste that is included.

*Then a thermoplastic tray that has been customized for each individual is used.

*A tooth conditioner is rinsed through the mouth to open the pores in the teeth.

*Whitening solution is then placed in the plastic tray. Whitening generally takes 9 minutes. A 6% solution of peroxide is the main ingredient used in the teeth whitening stage.

*A strengthening solution is then used to close the pores in the teeth and strengthen them.

White Strips

White strips are a very convenient way to whiten teeth. Pieces of flexible plastic made of polyethylene are coated on one side with hydrogen peroxide. Half of the white strips are made for the top of the teeth and the other half for the bottom. Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes per day for 7-14 days. This system is very convenient and can be used at any time of the day or night.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is one of the most effective methods of teeth whitening. It is also one of the most expensive. These procedures can only be performed by a qualified oral health care professional.

Bonding

Bonding is the use of a resin molded into the teeth to change the color and shape of the existing tooth. This is quite an expensive procedure and it is possible that over time, the bonding may chip or crack. This procedure takes one visit for results and is only available from a qualified oral health care professional.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a shell like coating that covers and bonds to stained teeth. Porcelain veneers are also used to reshape teeth as well as whiten them. Treatment usually requires 2 visits to an oral health care professional. This procedure is very effective but is the most expensive teeth whitening option.

Tooth Whitening Pastes

There are many whitening toothpastes available on the market some better than others. As a rule of thumb, whitening toothpastes are better than regular toothpastes for getting your teeth cleaner. This makes the teeth look whiter in the process. Be aware that some whitening toothpastes are abrasive and should be avoided. When choosing a whitening toothpaste, read the ingredients or speak to an oral health care professional for recommendations on what type of whitening toothpaste would suit you.

There are many teeth whitening options available. Some are better than others, some cheaper than others. When choosing a tooth whitening product or option be sure to speak to your oral health care professional about the associated risks and benefits. The best type of teeth whitening system depends a lot on your budget as well as your teeth. Since teeth are very personal and everyone has his or her own unique set of teeth, it is hard to recommend one particular method as different systems work better with some people than others.
